Limnos este a opta cea mai mare insulă din Grecia, cu o suprafață de 476 kilometri pătrați și a patra în lungime de coastă (310 kilometri). Este situat în nordul Egeului, în Marea Tracică, între Muntele Athos, Samotrace, Imbros și Lesvos. Împreună cu Agios Efstratios constituie provincia Lemnos în prefectura Lesvos. Capitala și principalul port al Lemnos este Myrina, numită astfel după soția primului rege al insulei, Thoanda. Până în 1955, Myrina a fost numită Kastro, nume care a predominat în perioada bizantină târzie și este încă numit formal de limniștii mai vechi. Limnos este o insulă vulcanică. Deși nu are păduri, are câmpii fertile extinse cultivate cu cereale și viță de vie. De asemenea, are plaje frumoase și curate și este o insulă ideală pentru o vacanță relaxantă. Principalele ocupații ale locuitorilor sunt vite, agricultură și pescuit. De asemenea turismul, comerțul și profesiile maritime. Populația insulei este de aproximativ 17.000, conform recensământului din 2011 (în 2001 populația era de aproximativ 18.000).
